Controlling Diabetes
Diabetes can kill you. It may not feel like it at first, in fact, if your blood sugar levels are in good control, you likely will not feel any effects at all-for a while. Medical advances are yielding great strides in diabetes care, but this terrible disease is still taking a grave toll. In fact, complications from diabetes are the sixth leading cause of death in this country. Diabetics are at a significantly increased risk for stroke, heart attacks, and kidney failure. It is something to take seriously. With the high incidence of diabetes in this country, it is wise to know the warning signals, especially if you are in a high risk category.
The Neuropathy Affect
Neuropathy is a mysterious disease. The Neuropathy Association calls it the most prevalent disease most people have never heard of. In fact, more than 20 million Americans suffer from some form of neuropathy. Neuropathy results from damage to peripheral nerves, often from diabetes. Symptoms may include pain, numbness, tingling, and poor balance. It shows up in the hands, arms, feet, and legs. The earlier it is diagnosed, the better it can be treated.
Diabetes Affects Your Quality of Life
Diabetes is a monumental problem in the United States and it is getting worse. Obesity has done much to contribute to the growth of the disease. As Americans grow heavier and become more sedentary, the disease has grown proportionally until it is now a problem that costs this country more than $40 billion annually in health care, hospitalization, and disability. In 2002, it was the 6th leading cause of death in the nation, although the numbers do not represent every death whose primary cause was diabetes. There is no doubt that diabetes is a ruthless killer. 65% of diabetics die from heart disease and stroke, and cardiovascular disease is just one of several serious complications associated with the disease.
