The Oldsmobile

By: Kathy Austin.

For as long as 107 years, since its inception in 1897 till 2004 the Oldsmobile was manufactured by General Motors. After the Daimler and the Peugeot, this is the oldest vehicle in the world. Production of this venerable car was phased out in 2004. The last three models of this automobile were the Alero, the Silhouette and the Bravada.

All the three cars took driving into an entirely new level of experience as they had been doing so for more than a century. They all had a neat sculpted look and the embellishments that came along with made these vehicles seem as if they were built especially for the person who is driving it.

One could experience the comfort, convenience, entertainment, safety, and security while riding it. Road & Track taunted for its delightfully well-balanced and nimble character. Car and Driver considered the Alero, "Downright world Class". The same could also be applied to other Oldsmobile cars. The Silhouette had a refined power while the Bravada includes an explosive mix of raw horsepower.

All Oldsmobile cars are powered by a 3400 SFI V6 Engine that can give a 185 hp at 5,200 rpm and 210 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,000 rpm except for its Silhouette model. The Alero and the Bravada are fitted with a 2.2 lt. DOHC engine with 140 hp. or a 3.4 lt. V6 with a full 170 hp and a 275 hp. Vortec 4200 DOHC incline 6 Cylinder engine respectively. This would surely make them deliver a very good performance.

Safety has been given prime importance in all the Oldsmobile cars. All of them come equipped with the mandatory safety equipment like air bags, both side and front. Anti-Lock Braking System is standard in all cars. The Alero and the Silhouette both feature the LATCH system for enhanced child protection. The Silhouette and the Alero come with additional safety measures such as Battery Run-Down Protection which automatically switches off the headlights after 10 mins., in case you forgot to switch it off, to name just one.

The feature laden Key-Less Entry is common in all three models. Its doors can be opened to a close of 30 m. It also has a panic button that can blow the horn and flash the parking lights when activated. For more visibility, al the models had a daytime running lamps.

All the three automobiles come with exceptional audio equipment to make your travel a pleasant experience. The Silhouette even has a DVD player with wireless remote, a 6.8-inch video screen, on-screen programming and normal, wide, cinema, and zoom settings, stereo RCA jacks with inputs for video game systems and camcorders and 2 pairs of wireless headphones with separate volume controls.

The Oldsmobile Keychains is in an octet. They are of the Teardrop, the Steering Wheel, the Valet, the Chrome Circle, the Metal Oval, the Leather Gold, the Leather Silver and the Chrome Rectangle. With the new addition, the Chrome Rectangle is a small and fascinating. All of them have the unique logo of the car while its name on it.
