Why Are Gas Prices So High And What You Can Do

By: Mark Myers

The cost of fuel has become entirely preposterous recently. There are things you can do. Agreed, some will be equivalent to banging your head against the wall, however some are useful. None are simple, but the more we do together, the more we will accomplish.

Why are gas prices so high? The obvious answer is supply and demand. Supply is not increasing due to international pressure for fossil fuels as fast as demand is increasing. Unfortunately the time of cheap oil and energy are leaving us forever.

The USA has chosen not to produce and refine more oil. The reasons are up to speculation. It is clearly understood that oil drilling and new refineries will have an ecological footprint; however the impact on the "white snow pollywog" has to be balanced with the impact to our economy. Most Americans feel the anguish every time they go to fill up. This is senseless. America has the resources to reduce its dependence on foreign oil, but chooses not to use them.

What can you do about high gas prices? Let your government know that its current policy (or lack of policy) is unacceptable. Ask them "Why are gas prices so high?" Don't accept political rhetoric. Demand they explain why they haven't endorsed our country building a new refinery in over 30 years. Next to starting an oil field in your yard, it will be hard to to affect supply.

So, why are oil prices so high? Demand is the one thing you personally can have some control over. Only 20-30 years ago operating a car required more than just turning a key and driving. You didn't have cruise. To affect demand you will have to stretch your comfort zone.

What does that have to do with high gas prices? Just trying to get you prepared for how you can save 30% to 80% on the fuel your car uses. You can wait for car makers to develop alternative energy automobiles, and keep paying insane fuel prices, or you can do something NOW.

Alternative energy is not new. The world has been exploiting nature for energy from the beginning of time. Think oxen, horses, fire, watermills, wood, oil, whale blubber, wind mills, camels, and sail boats. But history need not repeat itself, as far as transportation goes these all are best left in the past, especially when you already own a automobile.

There is a device you can construct from common materials for under $60 that will increase your fuel efficiency. It will burn hydrogen gas from water, on as it's needed. It then mixes the hydrogen with gasoline in your engine where it is safely ignited, resulting in more efficient use of fuel. Using simple tools to assemble the contraption it will take you a few hours to complete, and less than an hour to install. Here is the issue you will have to maintain it, which could take an entire half hour per month. Are you willing to give a little time to save so much?

Why are gas prices so high? They don't have to be.
