Tips For Excellent Web Design Practice

By: Chris Channing

Building the best design out there isn't going to be easy. But in the process of practice and adhering to common design principles, web designers can get a good start on making their own unique designs. But before this can be done, there are guidelines in making a generally sound web layout.

How well one can read a website is the overal goal of a web design. After all, if one can't read the website, what is the purpose of viewing it? It's generally best to have a large font that contrasts nicely against the background it is featured on. A 11 pixel font or great is a good start, although going for a bigger font is always nice for the reader (but harder to incorporate in smaller designs).

Almost as important as readability, the fact comes to be that without proper navigation, the design isn't going to be able to go very far. Intriguing CSS drop down menus have become quite popular among websites who follow trends. Other websites stick to the standard HTML menus that are strung along top and side navigation boxes. Either way, always have links to common parts of one's website- this helps both readers and search engines find what they need.

As most Internet users should know by now, there are a plethora of different web browsers to choose from. Everything from Mozilla Firefox to Internet Explorer and much more are being used by millions worldwide. Sadly, this means that developers need to optimize their code for each and every browser to render correctly. This requries proper coding skills, which are a great asset to have for larger and more important designs.

Once all the basics in standardization and readability are maintained, the act of being creative and reestablishing the norms becomes the next test. Using different palettes of colors, using new forms of shapes and blocks (The rounded rectangle box is a current favorite for web designers), and ultimately thinking of new ways to display information has become the measuring stick in how a web design project is rated.

Popularized web design tactics are still good to make use of, in spite of the fact that creativity and inspiring designs are important in obtaining. Most web design features that have become popular are popular for a reason, and keeping a few of them around won't do any harm. Most notably, the rounded text box and gradient usage of recent years is always a nice addition to any design.

Final Thoughts

Web design is a very tough industry to get into. There are many aspects in design and coding that need to be learned, and much of it isn't something that's going to be learned overnight. Thus, aspiring web designers should try to strive and mimic other designs and coding principles before trying to make the next big thing in web design. We have to walk before we can crawl- and patience is definitely a virtue in the concept of web design.
