When thinking about self defense most people take for granted that it must be self defense techniques or sprays, batons, tasers and so on but the true professionals know very well that something else has to be learned in order to practice real effective self defense. The most effective self defense has several steps and the first and most important one is awareness.

People who are aware of the possibility to suffer an attack are more likely to defend themselves in an effective way than those who are walking around thinking the police will take care of them. You are the first person to be responsible for your own safety and those that depend on you for this. Crime comes in many forms and mostly depends on time, place and opportunity. Being aware of these conditions is the first step to self defense.

The place you are at the moment also gives more or less possibility for an attack to happen. A dark street obviously is a perfect place to be attacked but you can also be "attacked" by a pick pocket thief when you are in a crowded disco or bus.

Objective recognition and analysis of your personal situation and behavior will give you the tools you need to fight crime in a very effective way without having to use self defense techniques or tools. Don't misunderstand me, I do endorse effective self defense techniques and many times defense tools like sprays can save our lives but I think that a complete self defense program should start with recognition of the problem , analysis and awareness of our own personal situation and behavior followed by avoiding those parts in our conduct and habits that make us more vulnerable to attacks and finally when all these steps are covered but in a certain situation cannot be applied of course self defense techniques must be learned and used in this case to save our lives.
