Television is a vital part of Mexican culture. Producers of soap operas will try almost anything to capture audiences. Adapted from the Argentine soap opera Rebelde Way, Rebelde is a Mexican soap opera whose producer had an idea that would capture his audience. The idea was to create a musical group for the soap opera that would support the characters and further storylines. In 2004, RBD was created. In little time, the band greatly surpassed the television program in popularity. The television audience no longer cared about what happened in the show; they just wanted to hear RBD's music. The soap opera only remained on air for three seasons: 2004, 2005, and 2006. Now, the members of the band: Anah, Dulce Mara, Maite Perroni, Christian Chvez, Alfonso Herrera, and Cristopher Uckermann have their own television series. It is a documentary-type program entitled RBD - La Familia (RBD - The Family). The first season has thirteen chapters that show the backstage of the band's life, the personal life of each member, the concerts, and recording in the studio. RBD is recognized in almost all of Latin America, excluding Argentina where none of their albums have been released. Recorded in Spanish, English, and Portuguese, their albums have generated followers from around the world with the most success in Brazil. In their four years in the music industry, they have been nominated for and won a shocking number of awards. In the World Music Awards, they were nominated for the "Best Latin Artist on the World." In the Latin Grammy Awards, they were nominated for "Best Pop Album by a Duo or Group with Vocal." In the Premios Juventud, or Young People's Awards, they were nominated for twenty-one awards and won seventeen. They won, in Brazil, "Best Duo or Group" and "Melhor Banda Internacional", or "Best International Band." They have been nominated for awards in thirteen different categories in the Billboard Latin Music Awards and have won awards for: "Rebelde" (Rebel) and "Celestial" for Latin Pop Album of the Year 2006 and 2007, "Tour Generacin 2006" for Latin Tour of the Year, and "Solo Qudate en Silencio" (Just Stay in Silence) for Latin Pop Airplay Song of the Year - Duo or Group. The fourth most sold out tour in Mexico was "Tour Generacin RBD" following The Cure, Britney Spears, and The Backstreet Boys. Although RBD was created to promote a soap opera, they soon grew to become a musical group with a fan base far beyond that of a soap opera audience. With their own independent success in the music industry, it is likely that they will continue with great success in the future. They deserve to win many more awards. I have enjoyed just writing about this remarkable band!
