The Case Of The Epson Printer Cartridge Vs Third-party Inks

By: DanPartridge

Manufacturers of genuine ink are waging a serious battle against third-party replacement ink manufacturers for continued dominance in the market.

Manufacturers of genuine brand inks like the Epson printer cartridge are aggressively fighting the makers of third-party replacement inks. That is quite understandable, given that third-party replacement inks have already cornered around 16% of the market. Manufacturers of branded inks like the Epson printer cartridge get most of their profits from the sale of printer consumables like ink and photo paper rather than from the sale of the printer machines themselves. And so they would not really appreciate third-party replacement inks stealing their profits away.

Genuine ink manufacturers have always been quick to assert that the prices of their printer ink cartridges are justified. Let us take as an example the Epson printer cartridge. Epson had stated on its official website that much of the cost of their Epson printer cartridges are attributed to the amount they have invested on research and development to continually improve their product. Moreover, it is not just their ink cartridges. Their printer heads, their paper and their ink are supposed to work together in order to bring out the best prints that their printers can produce.

Epson also said that it is impossible for third-party replacement ink manufacturers to be able to match the quality of the Epson printer cartridge. These third-party replacement ink manufacturers do not have the capacity to replicate the complete unity that is supposed to exist between the Epson inks, paper and printer heads. The fact that these replacement inks could not really jive well with the Epson printing process would result in prints with inferior quality.

Durability is also something that Epson claims it has an edge over the third-party replacement ink manufacturers. Citing a study done by the Wilhelm Imaging Research, Epson had said that photos printed using third-party replacement ink manufacturers have an expected life of no more than five years. Photos produced with the genuine Epson printer cartridge, on the other hand, are tested to last for more than 90 years. So, if users want photo prints that will literally last a lifetime without fading, Epson asserts that it is best to use their genuine ink products.

Epson, just like most genuine ink manufacturers like Canon and Hewlett-Packard, are making it hard for makers of third-party replacement inks to gain a bigger market share than the one they already have. One of the most obvious ploys is voiding out the warranty on their printer machines if the machine is damaged because the printer user has utilised third-party replacement inks.

Other than that, genuine ink manufacturers like Epson have also filed cases against third-party replacement ink manufacturers for patent infringement. The genuine ink manufacturers have also added speed to their research and development efforts to make it hard for third-party ink makers to catch up with their new inks.

Despite all these efforts, it all boils down to the choice of the consumer. If quality and durability is not a big deal to the consumer, then he or she should be able to choose third-party inks over genuine inks like Epson printer cartridges to save on printing costs. However, if quality and durability do matter, they should stick to genuine inks, such as the Epson printer cartridge.
