Student Accommodation In Edinburgh - An Informative Introduction

There are various forms of student accommodations in Edinburgh, from university housing to private rentals, all with their own pros and cons. For many first year students, the housing available on campus is often a good bridge between living at home and living in a stable college environment. Edinburgh University, Napier, and Heriot-Watt all have wonderful student housing located around the city but all close to the main campus. Living in a dormitory situation gives a student new freedoms and flexibility while still being surrounded by structure and studies. Alternatively, on-site apartments provide an even larger surrounding that is usually far more comfortable and connected to a common kitchen, bathroom and living area. Costs of living on campus are greatly reduced when sharing facilities, with the average monthly costs being around 300 GBP and this can include an evening meal. This is a great savings for students just starting out in their academic careers, especially as this cost covers bills also!

Once a student decides he or she is ready to move out into the world on their own they often look in the most popular areas for housing. Popular student hot spots, including Leith, Tollcross, Bruntsfield, Morningside and Dalry not only offer great rental opportunities but are also within close proximity of all universities and the city centre. Leases typically span six months at a time which is perfect for students not wanting to tie themselves into a long term contract.

Students enjoy an exemption of Council Tax on housing while they are in school, which can average between 100 - 200 GBP per month per property. This tax covers street lighting, refuse collection and other government services but students are relieved of this as they are not in full time employment. Renting an apartment is a popular choice for many students but there are many hidden costs of monthly rentals including gas, water, and other expenses. However, living in a privately rented property can often prove to be a cheaper option to living on campus when sharing with two or more other students and allows the individuals to have their own space with no boundaries or university rules.

The average rental price for a two-bedroom apartment close to the city centre is between 550 - 650 GBP per month . Utilities such as gas and electricity will add an additional 30 - 60 GBP per month, per person. Other expenditure, including the television and internet will vary depending on the supplier and package chosen but hidden costs, such as the TV License, do add up and this is one reason students generally opt to live on campus.

It is recommended that when first attending further education that you reside on campus for your own safety and to allow you to adjust to being independent whilst feeling secure. During your first year at university or college you will be given plenty of opportunities to meet and socialize with other students, providing you with a spring-board to choosing flat mates and going on to privately rent a property.
