Shopping Cart – Makes Shopping Online Easy

By: DanPartridge

Know the mechanics of the shopping cart as a tool to make online shopping more convenient for both the shopper and the seller.

Buying online became rampant. Buyers purchased from wholesalers by bulk right in the Internet. The web literally became a shopping place where wholesalers and retailers could ply their wares. Web browsers came to shop, whilst enjoying the ease and convenience of shopping right in their own homes. Hence a call for an innovative idea to electronically organise this activity was answered. The shopping cart system was then introduced.

The shopping cart system is a software generated form of assistance for both online shoppers and online traders. For the buyer, it simulates shopping by allowing them to place their purchases in virtual shopping carts. The simulation goes as far as checking out the goods at a payment counter, wherein the software acts as the cashier, it computes the total amount of purchase. The final output is a billing statement inclusive of shipping and handling fees and corresponding taxes if any.

However, how this system is set-up is not as easy as installing software or getting online access through a direct browser. A detailed outline as to how the shopping cart system works is presented below:

The Initial Set-up
The Host Site or the Hosted Service Providers (HSP): They act as the Application Service provider of the software to service the e-store of a seller, for a monthly or annual fee. Some HSP collect a percentage on the sales in addition to the regular fee and in exchange for a full shopping cart service. No software is required to be downloaded on the part of the seller if the host site is 100% web based. The shopping cart service generally includes the following but may have slight variations in other host sites:

· The HSP offers to set-up the seller’s online store complete with templates, with full provisions for an efficiently designed website containing home, category, product and unlimited content pages. If the seller has an existing web domain, domain transfer can be facilitated.

· The HSP will provide technical support for the shopping cart. This pertains to customer data, shop inventory and invoices.

· The HSP will provide a data import facility to furnish the seller records regarding customers, products and inventory as well as e-mail lists.

· The HSP allows the seller to modify the shopping cart application according to his needs provided it will be through their in-house developers.

· The HSP is fully integrated with all major payment gateways like Paypal, Google Checkout, Verisign. It should further maintain the privacy of payment transactions as well as credit card activities.

· The HSP provides 24/7, 365 online support, tutorials and knowledge base videos.

The Storefront:
The Online Shopper
This is known as the seller’s e-store located in the website provided by his Hosted Service Provider. This is where online shoppers go to browse over catalogues, pick-up their choices and place them in virtual shopping carts. The computer software runs a tab, generates the total amount of purchase including shipping and delivery costs and taxes if any. The billing statement and its corresponding payment will be settled as collection will be facilitated in any major payment gateway or credit card facility.

The Storefront
The Online Seller and owner of the e-store located at the website provided by his chosen Hosted Service Provider. This is where his stocks are placed on display on catalogue web pages priced and labeled according to his specifications

The Administration:
The Online Seller being the merchant has access to this area of the e-store where the management of the online store will be performed. Using his shopping cart program, the online seller will add or edit any featured product and its prices. His managerial functions will include modification in catalogue displays, promotional discounts, shipping, payment settings, inventory replenishment or pull-outs, etc. Placement of orders to suppliers is also included in his shopping cart program.

Shopping online makes shopping easy but shopping as well as selling online with a shopping cart is now made easier.
