Serving Appetizers At Your Restaurant

By: Patricia Farnham

Waiting for a meal when you are hungry can be very hard for guests at a restaurant. Once they see the food on the plates of those around them as well as smell it, they can become even hungrier than they already are. One way to help curb their appetite as well as help them be more comfortable while they wait for their meal is to offer appetizers.

There are establishments out there that offer various appetizers to customers as a courtesy. Mexican food locations are the most common with their baskets of chips and homemade salsa for dipping. This can be a part of the meal that the guests eagerly look forward to when they come in. You may need to set limits on such free items though so guests don't take advantage.

You want to be able to offer you guests plenty of wonderful appetizers to choose from. Think about the different things you can offer including onion rings, cheese sticks, and even BBQ wings. Some people may have a hard time deciding which appetizer they want. You can have a set price for a selection of several of them. This type of sampler place is ideal for allowing customers to try out new appetizers.

The section on the menu with appetizers may get overlooked by many guests though. To help it stand out you may want to add pictures in this area. You can also have an advertisement on display at the table for various appetizers. They will be encouraged to order it when they see the picture looking back at them.

Your staff needs to ask customers if they would like to try an appetizer as well. This is a great way to suggestively sale items that they may like. Promoting your appetizers is a great way to increase sales too. Have some good methods to offer to your staff so they can choose ways to promote this that they are comfortable with.

Make sure orders for appetizers get in to the kitchen quickly. They need to have a very fast turn around time. This way your guests won't have to wait long before they have something in front of them to eat. It also allows them plenty of time to enjoy it before the full meal comes to the table.

Make sure guests also have silverware, napkins, and dipping sauces for their appetizers. They want to be able to enjoy them while they are still hot. If they have to wait for the staff to accommodate all their needs the food can be getting cold. Being able to anticipate what the guests need is a vital part of successfully serving them from the moment they want in the door.

It is often a very good idea to serve appetizers at your sit down restaurant. Customers will be very happy with them, especially if they are part of the meal and at no charge. Should you have a menu of appetizers, you can be sure customers will buy them. This is a great way to increase your sales as well. It also keeps customers from thinking about their hunger until their main course arrives.
