These include the statements that have an effect on both the data and the schema, the queries that have the ability to retrieve the data, the expressions that are designed to produce tables or scalar values, the predicates that are used to specify the conditions, the clauses that are the main components of both queries and statements, the whitespace that is used for formatting the SQL code, and the semicolon statement that is a part of the SQL grammar.

Among these elements, the most common queries to an SQL database is the SELECT declarative keyword. This keyword is used to retrieve data from tables and various SQL database sources. However, this keyword does not have any standard effect on stored data.

Although the standard SQL is functional in many ways, a number of critics suggest that it lacks cross-platform portability between the vendors or database system. Most systems do not implement the entire SQL standard due to its complexity and size.
