Rush are simply one of the greatest live bands ever. The intense musical talent that came from out when they begin their career in the mid-1970s, considered amazingly high even by todays competitors, are still now on a different level. And who can pin them down to being any one particular genre other than "rock"? They've been called heavy metal, progressive rock, hard rock--and all of those labels and none of those labels are true. They have one of the most loyal and loving followings any band ever gathered together, even though they've got just about nothing in the "hits" department and almost all of their studio albums sound completely different from almost all of their other studio albums. And you have many of the elements as to what makes their shows the best and most entertaining I have ever seen. At a Rush concert you can sense an additional attentiveness given to the music usually absent at other similar concert events, specifically those show given by other hard core rock and roll bands. Many concerts are more concerned with the flash than the actual music because the music isn't anything special. When seeing the music group Rush in concert, one can see that the music is both complex and tight. Complicated, tight music that thousands of fans know word for word; the fans cheer, applaud, and go wild for the greatest complex lyrics in the rock music world! The thing that is the most amazing is that only three men create all the music that you'll hear. Unlike other bands, Rush doesn't use session musicians in the studio or their shows. This brings the band and the fans even closer together, and means that being at one of their amazing live shows is special, in a way no other band's show could be - regardless of the quality of that other band. The same bandmates, fitted together like a glove for over thirty years -- no bitterness, no hasty replacements, no phoniness. Just a simple trio of masterminds Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart- three musical geniuses and amazing songwriters. The atmosphere at a Rush concert just has a special charge even before the first note gets sounded for the night or the first laser cuts through the dark air. Rush concerts are about the music, but you also will enjoy a visual experience as well. In addition to lasers, the special effects crew is allowed the freedom to go crazy, for example; they show close-ups of the musicians’ performances in real time on giant video screens, they have added head-bobbing, time-keeping bunnies popping up out of top hats while the band plays “Tom Sawyer” their signature song as well as song-fitting flashpot explosions during “Fry Cry.” And the musicians are hardly just standing or sitting there--especially Neil Peart, who may be the only front man drummer there ever was in rock music and whose massive, full-circle drum kit always takes center stage. Lifeson, who plays Guitar and Lee, who is a singer, bass player and keyboardist are a dynamic duo who have just as much zest and electricity now in their mid-50's as they did when they were younger. The audience at a Rush concert has, besides many musicians, lots of non-musicians as well who play all sorts of air-instruments, even drums! As for the drums (There's no way that you can mention Rush without mentioning the drums.)during many other rock concerts, the drum solo is a time to grab a beer, or use the restroom, but that is not the case at a Rush concert. The drum solo is the most anticipated highlight of a Rush concert, and well worth the price of admission. The audience is transfixed for those last six to nine minutes and they go wild with applause and cheering at the end. Adding another great aspect to a Rush show is the fact that they all have terrific senses of humor to counteract the musical and lyrical seriousness. a few years ago, Lee edited the lyrics to a classic song "The Temples of Syrinx" and it became "we are the pirates of the Temples.".." Soon enough fans were waving pirate ship flags in the audience, and Lee further got into the act by wearing a stuffed pirate on his shoulder During the tour I spotted them four times.. And as for zany man Lifeson...this tour, he's got a set of buxom blonde Barbie dolls on stage in front of his foot switches bearing signs about how gifted or hot he is! Meanwhile, to match Lifeson's massive wall of Marshall stacks, Lee's side of the stage behind him features three large rotisserie chicken cookers--cooking real chicken! Non-fans sometimes refer to Rush as a cult. When attending a Rush concert, you will see the reason for this, and discover that they are at least half right about it. In short, attending a Rush show is like attending a religious festival and being a part of a living historical moment all at the same time. For three hours, everyone is singing.
