Is A Continuous Ink System Right For You?

By: DanPartridge

A continuous ink system is deemed a good alternative to regular inkjet printer cartridges. But before you buy one, you should ask yourself if it is indeed right for you.

If you have an inkjet printer at home and you are searching for cheaper alternatives to regular inkjet printer cartridges, the chances are high that you have already encountered a continuous ink system. Also known as a continuous flow system, the continuous ink system has gained popularity amongst printer users in the last few years.

You may have already asked yourself if such a printing system is right for you. If you have not figured the answer out for yourself, here are some points that can help you consider if you should buy a continuous flow system for your printer.

Why You Should Buy a Continuous Ink System?

The one big reason that may push you to buy a continuous ink system for your printer is the fact that it is a lot cheaper than a regular inkjet printer cartridge. At a casual glance, you may see that the difference between the price of a set of regular printer ink cartridges and that of a continuous flow system unit is not that big. However, a bottle of ink in a continuous flow system often has 100mL of ink in it. This is ten times as much as that contained in a regular cartridge.

It does not end there. Continuous flow systems are actually more economical in the sense that the ink filling those bottles can be used to the last drop. It is not advisable to do so, but it is nonetheless possible. On the other hand, with regular inkjet cartridges, the printer would refuse to function when the amount of ink reaches a certain level, even if the cartridge itself is completely empty.

Thus, if you are a heavy printer ink user, a continuous ink system would be the wiser choice for you.

When Is a Continuous Ink System Not a Good Buy?

A continuous ink system would be a good choice for you if you do a lot of print jobs that require a lot of ink, such as photos and graphics. However, if your printing jobs are confined to just documents, with the occasional digital photo or graphic file tossed in sometimes, you should reconsider buying one.

Just like any other type of ink, a continuous flow system can dry up when it is not used. You would only waste the ink and the money you spent in buying it, instead of saving it the way you have planned.

Another reason why you may want to reconsider buying a continuous flow unit is if you want to preserve the warranty of your printer. Using inks other than the ones sold by your printer’s manufacturer voids the warranty of the printer.

A third reason why you may not want to buy a continuous flow unit is if you do not have the patience to get it installed. It is very messy to install one on a printer, so if you do not care about that kind of chore, you should not do it.

A continuous ink system is a good alternative to regular printer ink cartridges. However, just like anything, you should determine if buying a continuous ink system would be a good decision for you or not before actually getting one.
