There are those who make things happen, those who watch what happens, and those who wonder what happened. In the world of sales for service professionals those who make things happen are in the top 20%, those who watch what happens are in the middle 60%, and those who wonder what happened are in the bottom 20%. Those in the top 20% never have to worry about money and they have the time to live the life they want to live the way they want to live it. So which group do you want to be in? Amazingly everyone reading this firmly believes they belong to the group who makes things happen. If that was a valid belief then you would already be in the top 20% and you’d be looking for ways to move into the top 20% of the top 20% or the top 4% of everyone in your profession. So if your results don’t match your beliefs where is the gap between your belief and your performance? The first gap is adoption. The bottom 20% believes they already know everything there is to know. There isn’t any help for these folks because they simply don’t want to learn and will not learn anything that would take them to a higher level. I call the middle 60% the squishy middle because they will pick up ideas here and there, and they will either take some small action to adopt those ideas or they will think they’re adopting those ideas when the reality is they haven’t fully understood the concept and aren’t properly adopting them. The top 20% who make up the top producers and future top producers take every idea that is in alignment with what they want to accomplish, and they ask themselves how they can adopt that idea ifor their business. The second gap is adaptation. Rarely will the idea that will immediately increase your sales be handed to you on a silver platter with all the trimmings. In fact, if it were you probably wouldn’t recognize it. Even if you did you wouldn’t appreciate the value and because you don’t appreciate the value you would never obtain the full value that was there the whole time. Therefore, you must take all ideas appropriate to your business objectives and adapt those ideas to fit you and your business. When you do that you take a good idea and make it a great idea that produces Tremendous results. The final gap is action. You see, those who watch what happens or wonder what happens are nothing more than dreamers. Dreamers wish they got the results of a top producer, and they hope that somehow someday they will get a break that will make them top producers. That isn’t going to happen. Nobody gets a break without first setting themselves up to get that break. Your success is directly proportional to the actions you take as long as those actions are the right actions. Once you’ve committed to adopting, adapting, and acting you’re setting yourself up for the sales success you want. From that point on you simply review the results from your current actions, identify the next idea you’ll adopt, and adapt and act on it. Continue this process and you’ll continue to advance to the sales success you want and deserve.
