A Car is made up of many different parts and systems that work together to make it run efficiently. The exhaust system is integral to a car's performance and efficiency, but is often neglected.

You are probably one of the many that think this system only takes care of channelling out the gaseous waste from the engine. While this is true, however, bear in mind that the way it does this is crucial to your driving satisfaction.

How does a healthy Exhaust System affect your car, truck, van or SUV's performance?

First off, let's take a brief review of the Exhaust system and then let's identify its major components: exhaust manifold, oxygen sensor, catalytic converter, muffler and exhaust pipe and their respective functions.

Generally, the exhaust system carries away the harmful excess gasses such as the hydrocarbons (unburned) carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, phosphorus lead and other metals that were produced during the combustion of the fuel and air mixture.

Those gases are harmful to the environment and to us humans so they must be cleaned before they are sent out of the vehicle. With this essential task of the exhaust system, it becomes necessary for us to check it regularly for damages or corrosion that could adversely affect its proper functioning.

The Emission control system and dual exhaust system are the two main types of exhaust system.

The Twin Exhaust System

The Dual or Twin Exhaust system has two tail pipes, as it's name suggests. This is very important for increased vehicle performance and power. This is because it allows faster flow and expulsion of the gases, effectively making the engine 'breath' more easily.

An Emmision Control System

This type of system works how the name suggests, by regulating the emmission of harmful gases expelled from the engine. They don't all do this the same way. Some systems stop pollutants being formed in the engine itself, while other systems convert harmful gases into harmless ones with the use of a catalytic converter.

Components that make up an Exhaust System

1. The Exhaust Manifold - This part is made of cast iron and is connected directly to the engine. It is designed to carry the gases from the combustion chambers to the exhaust pipes.

2. The Catalytic Converter - This component has the job of turning the harmful gases in safe ones like water vapour and carbon dioxide.

3. Muffler - This part is normaly made of fiberglass and works by absorbing the sound waves created by the gases travelling through the exhaust pipe. This makes your vehicle run more quietly.

4. Exhaust Pipe - this part carries the gaseous waste out of the tail pipe. It is usually made of steel or stainless steel.

Have your exhaust system checked every time that you have a car service. If there are any damaged parts, get them replaced immediately as they can have a serious effect on performance and safety.
