If you are not one of those people who are not too fond of standardized tests and the rigorous school system and feel you can do a better job teaching your child at home, then homeschooling may be an option for you. Many different forms of home schooling exist; and though they conjure up images of kids sitting around a kitchen table with mom day in and day out, modern day home schooling is very different. Yes, there is instruction from parents, but it doesn't just have to be mom any more. And more importantly, it is not just sitting at the kitchen table that is enough to give kids the extra edge you want them to have by educating them at home. Extracurricular activities, science experiments, music class, art fairs and the like are extra stuff you have to make the effort to do in home schooling so that your child gets a holistic approach to education not just books and pens. Homeschooling can solve these problems provided you are willing to make the commitment to spend a lot of time with your child. Some parents love sending their kids to school as they feel they get some time on their own do stuff inside or outside the house. Do I Like It? - When you give homeschooling a try, you will have to accept the fact that there will be little or no time left for yourself. In addition to the academic side of homeschooling, you will also have to help your child or children meet their social needs and hence join homeschooling groups and other park district type of activities so that they can get a well rounded education including music, art, sports etc. Unschooling and other home schooling parents have lots of support groups, online and in person where they discuss issues and give their children the opportunity get their social needs met. Disadvantages - Many people who are against home schooling feel the children do not get a sense of discipline and collective spirit that they do in school. They feel the child needs to be more independent; get on a bus, go to school, fend for himself to be able to be ready for the big bad world instead of being nestled in their parents watchful eye all the time. They feel home schooling cannot provide all the band instruments, gym equipment, art materials and audio visual equipment that a school can and hence they feel that in order to get a more rounded approach to education, they need to go to school. Share the Love - If you feel you are better at some subjects than others, you should ask for help from your spouse or other friends and family members so that you get a little break as well as the fact that someone else might be able to do a better job explaining something they passionately enjoy. For instance, you may be good with English and Math, but Science may just not be your forte. Outsourcing that subject to someone you trust for a few hours a week may be the answer to your problems.
