What must you do to have the most fun and avoid injuries and accidents? This article list the key Do’s of successful family football. By following them you and your family can enjoy a satisfying and healthy game of football. 1. Use the proper football. Footballs come in three coverings – rubber, composite and leather and three sizes – junior, intermediate and official. Prices range from about $10.00 to over $100.00 each. It matters little what covering you choose. A good properly inflated rubber ball is perfectly satisfactory provided that it (and any other cover type you choose) is official size. Smaller balls make no sense when adults are playing. 2. Choose a suitable location. Your family football game will be far more fun if you pick the right location. The most attractive place would be a level grassy area in a park. The least attractive would be an asphalt roadway. The more grassy and level a location is the less chance there will be for injury and hampered play. 3. Select the teams wisely. Choose the two teams for family play in a balanced way. If possible, ensure that there are the equal numbers of: (1) experienced players, (2) ladies and girls, and (3) younger players on each side. Also, give everyone the opportunity to play. Fun for the whole family is only possible if no participant feels left out of the game. 4. Employ simple rules. It is unnecessary to follow the NFL rules in a simple family game. However, some easily understood rules are required. They should cover such areas as scoring, blocking, tackling, field size, off-side, game timing and penalties. Ensure that all players know the rules and abide by them since there will be no referee. Keep the rules simple and easily understood. 5. Supply plenty of water. Playing football requires a lot of running. This activity drains the body of fluids. So it is important to have lots of water available for the players and let them drink it liberally. But ensure that no one overdoes it and gets sick. 6. Keep first aid supplies handy. There is a limited chance of serious injury in a family foot ball game. However, depending on the playing surface, injuries like scrapes, bruises and sprains can occur readily since most players are not physically fit. If some one is injured discontinue their play at once and, in more serious cases, take them without delay to a local hospital emergency room. Football for the family is meant to be fun and provide good exercise. By following these few simple Do’s it can be. Robert J. Waugh, 2119 Main Street, Unit 2, Lubbock, TX 79401-2997, 1-806-792-0433
