An exquisite set of flatware makes a lovely wedding, anniversary, or housewarming present, whether the kind you purchase is the highest quality stainless steel, silver-plated or sterling silver. The difference between flatware that is high in quality and flatware that is low in quality is that the best is more attractive and much longer lasting. The elements within the highest qualities of flatware make for better tasting food. There are two kinds of flatware - the informal and the formal. Every Day Flatware Stainless steel is usually used as the everyday eating utensils. When stainless steel is of the best quality, it is heavy, the tines on the forks are rounded and the knives contain high levels of carbon to keep the blades sharp. The best stainless steel flatware will have a pleasant feel to it. Quality blades will not be serrated because there will not be a need for it. Formal for Special Occasions Sterling silver, most commonly called "the good silver", when made in the right manner is astoundingly superb in looks and function. This is the formal wear. It is meant to be brought out on special occasions such as holidays, anniversaries, birthdays, or an occasion where special guests are invited for dinner. There are some who use their set everyday. If one is careful to wash and dry their set properly immediately after use, one will have to polish it once or twice a year. While it is not as high in quality as sterling silver, the silver plated flatware does make a nice choice as well. It is not as expensive as sterling silver but neither is it cheap. "Silver plated" means that stainless steel has been coated with a thin layer of silver. It can grow in value and is generally considered to be a nice set of formal flatware. Whether plated or the genuine sterling silver, these types are usually saved for the most special of occasions. A proper table for a dressy dinner has a nice set of china dishes, crystal ware, nice cotton napkins and a great set of flatware. Without the right flatware, such a table would be unfinished and off-balance. When the quality pieces are brought out, dinner becomes a stylish event. This makes formal flatware the best choice for gift giving. If someone you are close to is getting married, be sure to check their gift registry for their choice of flatware. Other occasions for giving flatware include birthdays, graduations and holidays. A great set of sterling silver is often given on a couple's silver wedding anniversary. Not only are these occasions great opportunities for giving formal flatware, but they are also the perfect occasions for using it. Let's face it: Without a nice set of flatware, a table that is dressed up never quite appears finished. The best table setting includes quality formal flatware. With so many types and designs to choose from, it is a wise idea to talk to someone who has knowledge of flatware before you buy it as a gift. A family friend who is known for their hosting ability is the perfect person with which to talk if you have questions about flatware. Choose wisely and you will help to create timeless memories for generations to come.
