Do you know how to help someone who is choking in your restaurant? It is amazing how many people own and operate a very successful business that serves food yet they aren't trained in this area. It only takes a second for this type of incident to take place in such a business. Don't wait until you have had to helplessly stand by before decide to learn these types of procedures. If you know what to do when someone is choking you can easily assist them. This is something you need to be able to do very rapidly. The faster you can remove the object the less risk there is of the person not being able to breathe. Too many times though when something like this happens the person is sitting there for several minutes before someone comes to their aid. As the owner of the restaurant you need to take responsibility for such assistance. This isn't to show off or to be the hero but to help those that came in expecting to just enjoy a great meal and things took a different twist. Since you won't always be at the restaurant either you need to make sure some of your other staff such as managers are also able to handle these types of situations. Check around locally and you should be able to find plenty of first aid classes to teach you about it. They may be offered during they day, at night, or on the weekend so you can be sure you will be able to find one that accommodates your schedule. If there is a cost to attend the class it won't be very much. Generally that cost is only to pay for your book that you get to keep. Approach the staff that you would like to attend this type of training as well. Your long term employees as well as managers should be a part of it. Let them know that you will be covering the cost of paying for their materials. You also need to pay them wages for the time they spend in the class. This will generally be a day or two depending on the program. You can write all of it off as a business expect for your taxes as well. There are different techniques to use for helping an adult and a very young child who is choking. Make sure that the program you take offers the procedures for both groups. With severe choking incidents, the individual may also require CPR after the object has been removed. With this in mind you need to make sure the course you take also covers the process of giving CPR correctly. Look for one that has mannequins that you can practice on as well so you can get a good idea of how the procedures should actually be performed. Small classes are nice too so that everyone gets plenty of one on one training. You should take a refresher course in these techniques every couple of years as well. Take some time to learn what you can do to help anyone choking at your restaurant. You don't want to have to rely upon others to take care of such an important manner. You also need to realize that you can use these skills anywhere so they really will be of benefit to you. Try to take a refresher course every couple of years. This way the material will stay fresh in your mind. It only takes needing to know what to do once for it to all be worth the effort you put into it.
