Bad Breath Saved My Life

By: Dynamic Blue Link

With all the modesty in the world, I am a good-looking 40 year-old woman. When I was younger, I was a sociable young woman terribly aware to the fact that I caused men to turn and gawk as I strolled. I never had a dilemma with boyfriends. I did have a problem warding off protective girlfriends. To date, 2 decades on, I still manage to be the focus of men's interest.

But in these final 10 years, things have been different. I have been haunted by a enormous bout of bad breath. This is malaise that has reined me in massively in all aspects of my life. Because I was acutely aware of the problem, I felt my confidence push downwards. All my life, I have been loyal to first class oral hygiene, but the bad breath would simply not leave me. In fact, it seemed to get poorer over time.

Desperate to heal this problem, I tried everything. Different toothpastes and mouth washes. I changed my toothbrush every month. I could loose my keys and money, but would never leave home without my mini toothbrush and dental floss. I even chewed on parsley each morning for a time because I was told it was an ancient healer. But no. Nothing helped.

With no Medicare or any other health insurance, I was forced to save money. Finally, I joined up all my savings to pay a visit to my dentist. Gum disease was detected. In fact, my gums are vulnerable and bleed often, which has distressed the care of my teeth, which are weak, yellow and some are even shifting. I am clearly heading towards loosing some teeth. There didn't seem to be an explanation for this as it was clear my oral hygiene traditions were indeed very good. So I was sent for a head scan. My dentist saw there was an underlying situation there that had to be checked.

The scan diagnosed the problem was much more troubling than just gum disease. It showed a weird layer that reached from my nasal cavity right down to my bronchus. Baffled, my dentist sent me off for a battery of tests. With the results back, I was directly recommended to a specialist.

The diagnosis was frightening. The guilty party of my bad breath was nose drops. A full check-up was proof that halitosis was the least of my difficulty. And it all became clear to me then.

More than 10 years ago, I recall being affected by a cold. Nothing special. It was a cold. Just a cold. I took the regular recommendations from the pharmacy - an aspirin for the heavy head, drops for my nose, lots of lemon tea and a few steaming baths.

But I remember it did take forever to go away. So, I went to the pharmacy to get anything stronger, and was told to go on with the nose drops to help me breathe better at night.

I didn't see, then, just how long ago that was. All the influenza symptoms went away, except the blocked nose. I continued with the nose drops, because I couldn't breathe without their help.

That was 10 years ago. For 10 years, I have been addicted to nose drops. I never went for medical help to get over my addiction because I never understood it as an addiction. Nose drops! Who would have predicted it would be so detrimental?

All this time, I never imagined so much trouble would come of this. But I now understand the guilty party for my heavy head, bags under my eyes and a heavy chest. My throat is always filled with mucous, and my lungs can’t seem to take in all the air I need. Even climbing a set of stairs has become a challenge for me. My cardiovascular system has also been affected. Heart failure, also called congestive heart failure, is a condition in which the heart cannot pump sufficient oxygenated blood to meet the needs of the body's other organs. A heart attack, or myocardial infarction, is equally a danger.

So, now I am getting ready for surgery. Four surgeries, to be honest. With a calculated healing time of 6-9 months. It will feature a full exercise program of body building, created to strengthen my damaged muscles and tendons.

I am paying a high price for my ignorance. Had it not been for something as simple as bad breath, I I would have suffered much more. Halitosis may seem a simple problem that haunts you for bad oral higiene, but it may well be the telltale sign that something much more dangerous is putting you at risk. As it turns out, bad breath saved my life.

And to think that all this was caused by a simple bout of influenza that was not healed as it should
