Spyware is computer software that is installed surreptitiously on a personal computer to intercept or take partial control over the user's interaction with the computer, without the user's informed consent. A recent threat to consumer privacy, spyware can reach your PC without your knowledge or explicit approval. This is always the case with ad cookies, yet another spyware subclass. More worrying are applications like that install themselves on the sly. Some may be mailed to you disguised as something useful. Of course, anyone with access to your machine can install a system monitor, stealing information like credit card and bank account numbers.According to a recent report from research firm GartnerG2, more than 20 million people have installed adware applications (adware being a type of spyware that reports back on a subject's activities to serve up targeted advertising), and this covers only a portion of the spyware on the loose. Spyware can let others see your every keystroke, open system vulnerabilities and backdoors and disable your firewall and antivirus program, leaving your system completely vulnerable. There are so many things that spyware can do to your computer so it is very important to remove it. There are programs that are specifically designed to detect, remove, and prevent spyware. They are called anti-spyware.Your computer can be easily infected with spyware when you visit a website. You can also get it by downloading programs that have spyware code embedded in them or opening an email from an unknown sender. The bottom line is that spyware can easily infest your computer if you frequently use the Internet. Websites play quite a role in propagating spyware that merely browsing the Internet can cause spyware infection. You must be very careful when surfing; as such, if you treasure your privacy, these tools are essential. Even if you locate spyware on your own, manually deleting it is difficult. Some spyware includes tricklers, which reinstall files as you delete them. An anti-spyware program is more likely to be able to eliminate the offenders. Many programmers and some commercial firms have released products designed to remove or block spyware. Steve Gibson's OptOut pioneered a growing category. Programs such as Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE and Patrick Kolla's Spybot - Search & Destroy rapidly gained popularity as effective tools to remove, and in some cases intercept, spyware programs. Still, be careful when downloading "free" anti-spyware programs, for they themselves may be spyware as well. You can't have true, complete protection against Internet malware without installing spyware along with your firewall and antivirus programs. Not all antivirus programs can detect or remove spyware, and even the best firewall is vulnerable against spyware attack once it gets through. Though it's now common to bundle spyware along with your firewall and antivirus program, a third spyware won't hurt, especially since it's specifically designed to target spyware, unlike the bundled spyware programs that are more like extras than anything else.
