Affiliate Marketing: What They Don't Tell You

We've all seen ads promising that we can use the Internet to make money. It's tempting to accept this as true, but we all know that there are scams out there, and no such thing as easy money. So, how do we figure out which promises can actually come true and which are empty?

One Internet business that just keeps coming up is affiliate marketing. The idea isn't new, although doing it on the Internet is a twist. The basic idea is that you will earn a commission in return for helping a business increase their client base or their sales, or both.

For example, you may have earned a referral reward from a business for bringing them a new customer. A company selling air conditioners might give you a cut of the profit they get when they make a sale on your recommendation; a car dealer might offer you a free tune-up or credit toward accessories. Affiliate marketing works on the same principle.

Affiliate marketing is a genuinely lucrative market. Yes, you can work at home and earn really good money from the Internet. But don't think that it's a walk in the park. Nothing in life is that easy. The potential of an affiliate marketer is limitless but there is a price to pay for such potential.

One of the really nice advantages of being an affiliate marketer is that you are not tied to the product. Which means you don't have any initial expenses. If you start promoting a product and the product doesn't sell well, no worries, just switch to a better performing product and you're still in business.

And the dreams of working from home can be a reality, too. You are your own boss, you choose your own hours, and you choose your place of work. You can work as many hours as you like; some people do 10 or 12 hours each week, others work more than 60 hours a week. It is all about how you want to spend your time and how much you want to make.

It's not all fun and riches, though. Those first few months can be really interesting, when you are trying to build up contacts and make your first sales. You may have some false starts and setbacks. And with no regular salary to count on, there is a definite risk to becoming a full-time affiliate marketer. You need to understand the risks, and decide if you can accept those risks.

You do need discipline and perseverance though. Having freedom to control time means that you need to have a strong work ethic and discipline to make yourself work on your chosen home business. Perseverance and determination are a must for an affiliate marketer, especially during the first few months when when you're getting started.
