Advice For Cycling With A Kid On Board

By: Mike Clarkson

When you secure a child onto your ride there are some safety issues that you want to be sure and address, besides the obvious like everyone should wear a helmet.
When you mount a carrier on to your ride, you have some things that must be checked off before you and your kid ride off over the horizon.

It is essential to realize that the extra weight of a kid on your ride will change where the center of gravity is. It’s vital that you have a high quality, strong ride with a sound frame, at the very least; to insure both you and your kid will be safe.

Abby Langford is the national examiner for a respected bicycle NGO working to help make sure that riders remain safe and don’t forget some basic safety rules.

“Make sure that you are a capable rider as the centre of gravity is raised and how your ride operates and feels may change,” said Abby Langford.
“Ensure that when you start out, that you are paying attention, don’t reach around to grab something or get out something, that is often when the ride will tip over and can be dangerous,” said Abby Langford.

Choose the route that you take carefully, and try to avoid busy roads as often they have a lot of confusion that make biking with a kid on board tricky and hazardous. “If you are able to take quieter side routes it is likely the best thing for you and for your kid,” said Abby Langford.
