Adding Bay Windows Adds Value

If you are thinking about a bay window for your home, you will need to know what all is included in the installation. You will want to make sure that you have all the right tools. They are normal tools that most people have already. They will include a saw, framing square, tape measure, a drill of course the right size drill bits, a level that you are comfortable holding, sharp utility knife, a pair of tin snips and a caulking gun so that you can fill in the gaps.

You will also need to make sure you have the right materials for the window unit. Some of these supplies include the support brackets for the windows, nails to put the window in, a bit of roofing paper, shingles to finish off the exterior and exterior caulking to stop any drafts. Sometimes you will want to make sure that you have fiberglass insulation. You will also need to have an idea for what you want to use as the window skirting. If you are making a window bigger in your home, you will need to have things like wood studs, drywall, and some other framing materials.

The first step is to find the right location in your home. You will need to think about the room that you want it in and the place where it is going to look right. You will first have to remove the existing window and then plan where the new one is going to fit the best. You need to know how much you have to cut. The next step is to mark the lines where you need to start cutting and then you can make your incision into the wall.

The next decision is the framing. You will want to figure out what you want to frame it with. There are so many different ways to do it and almost anything and anyway that you decide is going to work. Just make sure that you are installing support braces for your bay window. A good example is if your window is five feet wide, you will have to use at least two support braces. If you have a larger sized window than most likely, you will need to have more.

This will help to keep it in place, as it should be. Another step in putting in a bay window is of course the roof. Yes, a bay window will have to have a roof installed on the top of it. Making the roof means that you have to fill it in with roofing paper and then shingle it as needed. Next is the window skirting. The next step is to fill it in with insulation and then you will want to attach the skirt at the bottom so that you can seal the bottom of the window and keep it secure. Make sure that you finish up by sealing in the edges with some silicon caulking to keep it from leaking.

Putting in a bay window is normally a minor project, but you should think about how many hours it will keep you busy to install it. Sometimes you may need to have an entire morning open to do it or for others, it will take them all day to make sure that this project is completed the right way.

You should have help ready because chances are you will need a hand installing the window. If nothing else, you will need someone to help lift the window in place. Having more than one person is a very good judgment call to make.

Just remember that using a bay window will make your room and home stand out. It is a great centerpiece for any home’s décor. Having a bay window installed properly for your home will definitely increase the value of your property.
