8 Fun Poodle Facts

Thinking of owning a pet? Poodles are best for you because they are one of the most wonderful pets. Aside from their excellent and distinguishable features, they are among the most intelligent breeds. They are usually small but you may be surprised to know that there are 3 different sizes. Here are some poodle facts you might find interesting:

The 3 sizes of poodles identified by the American Kennel Club are - the Standard Poodle, the Miniature Poodle and the Toy Poodle. The biggest among the breed is the Standard Poodle that stands over 15 inches at the top of theshoulders. Miniature Poodle is the middle size and stands 10 inches at the top of the shoulders. Toy Poodles are the smallest and stands under 10 inches and usually weighs around 6 to 8 pounds.

But there are even smaller than Toy Poodles, the Tiny Toy and Teacup Poodles. These two varieties are becoming popular pets although their size variation is not recognized by the AKC. The Tiny Toy only weighs about 4 to 6 pounds while the Teacup is the lightest that only weighs 2 to 4 pounds.

One of the most important benefits of owning a poodle is that they don't shed and are hypoallergenic, which makes them the perfect pet for those with allergies. Another one of the interesting Poodle facts is that they don't have the strong odor often associated with other breeds.

Carvings of a breed of dog that resembles a poodle, which are one of the oldest known breeds of dogs, are found on Roman and Greek coins. Poodles became an AKC recognized breed in 1890, and became the most popular breed of dog in the United States by the 1960s.

Poodles were popular in France, Russia and Germany since the 1500's - the French like the so much that they made the Poodle their national dog! They are well known for their excellent hunting skills, especially in water retreiving, in fact the name Poodle comes from the German Pudel which is short for Pudelhund meaning "splashing dog". Of the three different types of poodles, the standard is the oldest.

The Poodles unique coat that ranges from coarse and wool like to soft and wavy. This coat can be done in a variety of cuts and clips. We all know the Poodle show clip, but in addition there is a puppy clip, an English saddle clip, a continental clip and a pet clip. You can also cord a Poodles hair like a Komondor.

Because Poodles are intelligent, highly active and fun-loving, you'll find an endless number of activities to enjoy with your dog. They're excellent watch dogs and can be trained to hunt. They can learn a variety of tricks easily and are not difficult to house train. Give your Poodle plenty of playtime and yard activities to keep him entertained and happy. These are friendly dogs and will always be eager to please.

A healthy poodle will tend to have a long lifespan. Typically a toy will live to 17 years while a miniature will live about 14 years and a standard poodle will go about 11 1/2 years.
